Most slow, painful rope quotations share one cause: an underspecified RFQ. “Please quote 10 mm PP rope” sounds complete but is not — the supplier must either guess (and quote wrong) or reply with ten questions. This checklist closes the loop in one message.
The nine fields
1. Application. What the rope will actually do — packing, mooring, baling, flagpole, net repair. This alone resolves most ambiguity and lets the supplier catch mistakes (“for a flagpole you will want low-stretch polyester, not PP”).
2. Material. PP, PE, nylon, polyester, cotton or a blend — or state the behavior required (“must float”, “3+ years outdoor”) and let the supplier propose the fiber. See the materials comparison.
3. Construction. 3-strand twisted, braided, hollow braid, double braid, split film twine… Construction changes price and performance as much as fiber.
4. Diameter / twine size. Rope: nominal mm. Twine: denier/ply (210D/12) or diameter + runlength. See how to choose diameter.
5. Length and quantity. Both: “200 m coils × 500 coils” or “total 10,000 m in cut lengths of 15 m”. State whether length is rope length or finished assembly length (with splices).
6. Color. Standard or custom; note if colorfastness outdoors matters.
7. Packaging. Coils, reels, spools, balls, cut-length retail packs — plus labeling and barcode needs. See rope packaging options.
8. Destination country. Affects quote terms (EXW/FOB/CIF), documentation and packaging standards.
9. Special requirements. UV stabilization level, spliced terminations, matching an existing product (photo/sample), any required test reports — say it upfront.
