Rope Materials

The fiber decides the big behaviors: does it float, how much it stretches, how long it survives sunlight and what it costs. Pick a material to see its properties and the products made from it — or read the full materials comparison.

MaterialFloats?StretchUV resistanceTypical role
Polypropylene Rope Yes Moderate elongation under load Moderate Packing, bundling and general tying
Polyethylene Rope Yes Moderate to high elongation Moderate Fishing and aquaculture: net repair twine, longline, cage mooring utility lines
Nylon Rope No High Good Anchor and mooring lines (elasticity absorbs surge loads)
Polyester Rope No Low Excellent Flagpole halyards (low stretch, UV-stable)
Cotton Rope No Low-to-moderate Poor Decoration, interior and display
Mixed & Specialty Rope Varies Depends on blend Depends on blend Cost-driven utility programs that still need decent handling
Jute Rope (Natural Fiber) No Low Poor Garden, allotment and decorative use (rustic look, biodegradable)
Sisal & Hemp Rope (Natural Fiber) No Low Poor Cat scratching posts and animal scratching products (the standard fiber)
Polypropylene split-film twine and small rope products in multiple colours

Polypropylene Rope

The most widely used synthetic rope fiber: lightweight, floats on water, rot-proof and economical. The default choice for packing, marine utility and agriculture.

Floats
Blue polyethylene 3-strand twisted rope coils, stacked

Polyethylene Rope

Soft, flexible and floatable — the standard fiber of the fishing and aquaculture industry, and a good choice for cold-weather or repeated-handling utility rope.

Floats
Grey double-braided nylon rope skeins, bulk supply

Nylon Rope

The strongest of the common synthetic rope fibers, with high elasticity that absorbs shock loads — the classic choice for anchor, mooring and dock lines.

Sinks
Red and white tracer polyester braided rope coil

Polyester Rope

Low stretch, excellent UV and abrasion resistance, keeps its strength when wet — the reference fiber for long-term outdoor and marine rigging.

Sinks
Natural cotton 3-strand twisted rope balls, set of four

Cotton Rope

Soft, natural and knot-friendly — chosen for decoration, crafts, pet products and packaging where hand feel and appearance matter more than strength.

Sinks
Mixed-colour 3-strand twisted utility rope, orange and black coil

Mixed & Specialty Rope

Engineered combinations — blended fibers for cost/performance balance, and functional electric fence polywire, polyrope and polytape with integrated metal conductors.

Varies
Natural jute 3-strand twisted rope coils and hanks, on a white surface

Jute Rope (Natural Fiber)

A coarse, biodegradable natural fiber rope with a soft hand and a distinctive earthy look — the standard for rustic retail, garden, pet and craft lines, and a long-established industrial tying product.

Sinks
Sisal / hemp 3-strand twisted rope ball, natural pale gold

Sisal & Hemp Rope (Natural Fiber)

Stiffer and stronger than jute, with a pale golden color and a rougher, more “industrial” hand. The traditional choice for cat scratching posts, agricultural tying, and decorative or utility use where a harder-wearing natural fiber is required.
